Argentinian striker Luciano Becchio was on target for Norwich City Under-21s – but could not prevent the young Canaries from being eliminated from the Premier League International Cup.

Paul Wilkinson's team went into the game knowing that a draw would seal progress to the quarter-finals and a clash with the U21s of Spanish club Athletic Bilbao – having lost to Chelsea and beaten Borussia Monchengladbach in their other Group A games.

But a late goal from the U21s of FC Porto denied them that fixture, in a match played at Colney this afternoon.

Becchio and Spanish defender Ignasi Miquel were the over-age players to feature for City, alongside youth prospects such as Jacob Murphy, Conor McGrandles and Kyle McFadden.

The Portugese visitors secured all three points courtesy of a late Roniel Costa winner, after Becchio's second-half penalty had levelled the match following an early Leandro Silva spot-kick.

Porto took the lead after 15 minutes when Silva scored from the spot after Louis Ramsay brought down the tricky Costa from behind and they maintained their lead through to half-time.

Cameron Norman was then brought down in the 52nd minute to earn City a penalty, which 31-year-old Becchio took, in his first game since breaking his ankle while on loan at Rotherham in September.

Porto keeper Raul Vega denied the former Leeds striker but just a minute later McGrandles won another penalty for the Canaries, and Becchio made no mistake with his second chance.

Murphy struck the post in the 77th minute but it was Porto who took the win, Costa breaking beyond the last line of defence and firing a deflected shot past Remi Matthews.

City's U21s return to action on Monday night, when they take on Southampton at Carrow Road.

Norwich City U21s: Matthews; Ramsay, McFadden, Miquel, Efete; Grant (Cantwell, 89); Norman, McGrandles, Kelly; Jacob Murphy, Becchio. Unused subs: Oxborough (GK), Boateng, Cole, Burgess, Couzens, Crowe.
