The drama of the situation certainly wasn't lost on Nelson Oliveira, whose brace merely earned a 3-0 lead the Canaries could fritter away, at a Leeds side desperate to keep alive their Championship play-off ambitions.

'Yes, it sums up the season,' said the striker, unable to add much more – other than an expression oozing frustration.

His second goal and City's third came on the stroke of half-time, yet Chris Wood's reply just seconds later gave Leeds a boost that effectively resurrected a game that should have been dead and buried.

'It's frustrating because we put in a very good performance in the first half,' said Oliveira. 'We should've gone in at 3-0 and we conceded that late goal.

'We knew they would come back strong for the second half because they scored in the last minute of the first – and the last thing that should happen is we then concede in the first minute of the second half.

'We concede a scrappy one and after that it is a completely different game. We couldn't enjoy the game because it became a fight game, their fans were pushing up.

'The second half we didn't start properly, and after that it is a completely different game. With the fans they were pushing them up and it wasn't easy, but we should've won. We played really well, scored three goals and could've score one or two more.

'In the second half, it was a tough game. The first goal gave them some belief and they started the second half really hard because they scored that first goal. If they didn't score that, I think the game is done.'

Oliveira was among those to miss opportunities – even in the second half – and arguably should have come away doubling his day's tally.

'Yeah, if I scored all my opportunities I could've had four or five – but a striker never scores all their opportunities,' he said.

'I think I could've done a hat-trick – maybe not four, but a hat-trick. The goalkeeper made a great save when I controlled the ball in the box and I shot; he made a great block. And with my left shot before, maybe I could've shot better – but it's gone.'

Oliveira's brace took him into double figures for the season, while saving the final word for the travelling City fans as they could put their long hauls to bed for another season.

He added: 'We have to say thank you to the fans because I think they have been fantastic this season, at home and away. Thanks to them.'
