Jonny Howson on his Norwich City wonder goal

Howson's sublime volley opened the scoring in Norwich City's 5-1 Championship romp over the Reds and sparked a debate over the rest of the weekend which saw nearly 3,000 vote Howson's hammer as the best ever goal scored by a home player at Carrow Road.

The midfielder was suitably modest when he spoke publicly for the first time on Monday afternoon at Colney about his breathtaking volley.

'To be mentioned with something like that as the best goal ever scored at Carrow Road by a Norwich City player is very pleasing,' he said. 'Let's be honest we all like to score goals and it is extra-special when you score them like that.

'Nine times out of 10 when you are stood on the edge of the box you are thinking, 'give me one that comes out for a volley or something like that,' so it is half in your mind. When it was coming in my direction I had a quick look to the right to see if the guy was going to get there in time and it was a split second. I knew I had hit it well but obviously you are hoping it goes in.

'At the actual time I possibly didn't think mine was as good as it actually was and then a few minutes later when Wes (Hoolahan) scores that I am thinking, 'typical' and that is the way it goes. We obviously do shooting after training sometimes on a Friday. Funny enough the day before they were flying over the fence and anywhere but the goal so I probably got all the bad ones out of the way.'

Howson admitted his own celebrations had been low key since the weekend.

'I'm not on social media. A couple of friends back home and my brother had sent me a few things and it is nice to get that recognition,' he said. 'I have not been out over the weekend, what with the game Tuesday. We just had some friends down and my granddad was down. He has probably done better than that at some stage, I am sure.

'One question people have asked quite a bit is whether it is my best Norwich goal. There was the one at Manchester City as well and they are two very different goals. I wouldn't say the volley is easier but it is one hit, whereas at Manchester City and against that calibre of opposition it is something I would be less likely to do, compared to the one on Saturday.

'A few of the lads at half-time and after the game said it was an unbelievable goal. I'm not saying I thought it was a bad one but until I actually watched it back I didn't realise it was as good as it actually was. When I watched it back, I thought, 'that's pretty good'. At the time we had a bit of banter with Wes. We were both pleased to get on the scoresheet and two very nice goals. It is funny in a way.
