Norwich City's new loan signing Jonas Gutierrez is looking for a new lease of life after swapping Newcastle for Norfolk.

Gutierrez completed a short-term deal on Monday until the end of the Premier League season and the Argentine international hopes his former boss Chris Hughton can help kick start a career that had stalled at St James' Park. The 30-year-old is not eligible for Tuesday's FA Cup third round replay at Fulham but he admitted it was not a difficult decision to cut his Tyneside ties after just one start this campaign for the Magpies.

'This has not been a normal season for me because I had played quite a lot in the past five seasons so it was a new situation for me not to be involved,' he told the club's official site. 'That is football but it can also change a lot. It will be strange to play for another team. I had a great time at Newcastle and I made a lot of friends so it will be different to go to another training ground and another stadium, but I want to start playing games.

'I know what the club is fighting for - to climb the Premier League table - so it is important for me to be here and try and do my best for the team. Personally I want to do the right things on the pitch and win my place and to work hard and then for the team to finish as high as we can. I know the manager here from our period together in Newcastle so he was one of the biggest points to convince me to come.'

Hughton expects the experienced midfielder to prove his worth after becoming his first signing of the January window.

'He has been here in England for five years so that means there shouldn't really be any need for a settling in period, which is particularly important in January,' he said. 'He can play on either flank and most would know him as that type of player and we have had problems in the wide areas with the games Anthony Pilkington and Elliott Bennett have missed through injury. We look forward to working with him. He is a very good individual and the Newcastle supporters took to him very much. This is a fresh challenge for the lad and it is also good to freshen up the squad because it is a difficult time to bring in players compared with the summer, but we are working hard.'
