John Ruddy is grateful to have Championship involvement back in his hands – and doesn't plan to let go of it easily.

The 30-year-old goalkeeper started the season as Alex Neil's number one before a groin injury ended his first Carrow Road game this term at half-time.

But the dipping form of summer recruit Michael McGovern and ultimately a reported knee injury sustained while away with Northern Ireland this month opened the door to Ruddy's league return.

And although it didn't get off to the best of starts, Ruddy hopes his return at QPR will see him retain his place at Derby tomorrow – and beyond.

'I've waited patiently for my chance. I've worked very hard in training, kept my head down and made sure I could be as supportive as I can for the team going out there, and Michael as well,' said Ruddy.

'As goalkeepers, everybody knows it's a strange position because only one of you can play – but on a day to day basis you're working to try to get the best out of each other.

'It was a situation that was out of my hands and now it's in my hands. Results like Saturday won't help my cause but if I can put my performances together and try to affect the people in front of me, that's my job and what I want to be able to do.

Ruddy added: 'Obviously it's very frustrating. I want to play every game and the fact I came out of the team through injury makes it even more frustrating.

'If I'm picked for the next few games – hopefully if I keep my place – I will be doing my utmost to make sure we can pick up the results.

'You hear the whispers around the place about team spirit and what have you. But in my view, the team spirit is fantastic. We have got a great bunch of players.

'Now it's just about making sure we bring that on to the pitch and our determination comes through.'
