Norwich City's player of last season James Maddison has completed his Leicester City medical, as he closes in on a switch to 2015-16 Premier League champions Leicester.

After a weekend of speculation the Canaries accepted a bid from the Foxes on Sunday for Maddison – believed to be for a fee in excess of £20m, that could reach £25m with add-ons.

That figure will blow out of the water City's previous sale record, after Alex Pritchard was sold to Huddersfield Town for a deal worth up to £14m in January.

The 21-year-old star of last term and England Under-21 international, Maddison headed to the Midlands on Monday for his medical ahead of completing his own Premier League move.

The midfielder had suffered a grade one tear of his medial knee ligament just 11 minutes into City's final game of last season at Sheffield Wednesday, and was roughly six weeks into what was expected to be at least eight weeks of rehabilitation.

However Maddison was always expected to be fit in time for the start of pre-season training for Premier League clubs.

With Everton, Southampton and West Ham also linked with moves for Maddison, there had been speculation at the start of the weekend Saints had bid for the midfielder – although it's understood Leicester have always led the chase for the player's signature.

City signed Maddison from Coventry in February 2016, for a fee rising to £3m – before being immediately loaned back to the Sky Blues for the remainder of the 2015-16 campaign, and then spending the first half of the following season at Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen.

Coventry are expected to be owed a sell-on clause of about 15pc from the profits of Norwich's initial sale – while Norwich may well have negotiated their own sell-on clause with Leicester, who are lining up their own sale of Riyad Mahrez for in excess of £50m.

Maddison signed a new four-year Norwich deal last summer and started 42 league games last season, ending it as top scorer with 14 goals – many of them special strikes – and taking away the coveted Barry Butler Memorial Trophy.

However with City's failure to earn promotion and the expiry of their parachute payments – alongside Maddison's personal success story – his sale became inevitable.

City have had a busy two weeks with Josh Murphy joining Premier League new boys Cardiff for more than £10m and Marley Watkins ending his difficult Norwich switch with a £1.3m move to Championship rivals Bristol City – alongside the £1.3m signing of Getafe playmaker Emi Buendía.
