Norwich City fans may not have seen much of James Maddison this season but the playmaker has still been continuing his development at a decent pace.
This week he reminded fans of his talents when winning two penalties, cheekily chipping home one of them, as the Canaries' under-23s thrashed Dinamo Zagreb 6-0.
After signing from Coventry City in January 2016 in a deal worth around £2.5million, despite strong interest from Liverpool and Tottenham, there was much excitement about the midfielder's future with Norwich City.
However, supporters have still only had one proper look at Maddison in a first-team game, when he impressed during a 6-1 thrashing of Coventry at Carrow Road in the second round of the EFL Cup earlier this season.
He then also played in a 6-1 win at Peterborough United in the group stages of the Checkatrade Trophy, scoring his first goal in a Norwich shirt, before joining Aberdeen on loan until January.
The 20-year-old scored twice in 17 games for the Scottish Premiership side – including a memorable free-kick in a 2-1 win over Rangers in September – before returning to Norfolk.
On his return the skilful attacker told City boss Alex Neil that he didn't want to go back out on loan but instead stay and try to force his way in to contention.
He scored again as the U23s beat Aston Villa 4-3 at Carrow Road in the Premier League International Cup in mid-January but then picked up a back problem.
Maddison returned, after more than a month without a game, against Zagreb in the quarter-finals of the same competition on Monday. He began the attack which saw Kyle Lafferty open the scoring and confused Dinamo defender Filip Uremovic with his quick feet just before the break, who chopped him down. The Canaries prospect duly dusted himself down and coolly chipped the keeper from the spot to make it 4-0.
The youngster continued to be at the heart of City's good play and was brought down again in the closing stages – but let Todd Cantwell roll the spot-kick home on his 19th birthday.
Forcing his way into the first-team reckoning this season may prove tough but Maddison is already showing what he is capable of.
