Norwich City have announced a second contract extension of the day, with midfielder Louis Thompson bouncing back from his injury problems to earn a new long-term deal.

The 23-year-old former Swindon midfielder has signed fresh terms until 2022, with the option of a further year for the Canaries, after emerging from almost 18 months out with an Achilles injury.

Thompson has made seven appearances in all competitions so far this season, three of them from the start, after playing a regular part in pre-season.

'I'm delighted,' Thompson said. 'It has been nice getting back on the pitch, it's been a better start to the season than I could have hoped for after the injuries I've had, and I'm thankful to the club for the faith they have put in me and hopefully I can show that on the pitch.

'It wasn't an easy spell for the club and for me, at the end of the day they want me on the pitch as much as I want to be on the pitch.

'They were really patient, got me the best care and hopefully now we can reap the rewards going into the next part of the season.'

Thompson was signed on deadline day in the summer of 2014 by then manager Neil Adams, in a deal reportedly worth £600,000 which could rise to £1.3million.

He ended up playing on loan for his former club for the next two seasons and after emerging during the early stages of 2016-17 under Alex Neil suffered a pelvic injury, before rupturing his Achilles tendon twice in the space of six months.

The deal follows hot on the heels of a new deal for left-back Jamal Lewis, who has signed up until 2023.

Thompson made over 100 appearances as a youngster for Swindon, mostly in League One, but now has his long-term future as a Championship player secured.

Speaking to City's website, he continued: 'It is a great time to be at the club if you are a young player. I think Norwich are heading in the right direction and young lads are being rewarded with contracts.

'They are putting in the performances and the trust is there from the manager so if you are good enough you play and that is a nice motto to have. It is encouraging for players coming through.

'I didn't play last season but I built a relationship with him (Daniel Farke) that I valued and he spoke to me and included me in things which was important so I never felt excluded. I am thankful to him for everything he has done for me. He has been really patient with me this season, he has given me the time that I needed, and he has helped me on the pitch. I am very much enjoying my time under him.'

Head coach Farke says Thompson is an important part of his plans for the future.

'It is a sign of how much we believe in him,' Farke said. 'He was out for two years and that's a pretty long period for a player on professional football level, but he was always there with such big passion for this Club and for this group and even during his rehab he was close to the team and desperate each and every day to be together with the boys and work so hard.

'It's totally deserved that he is in a position where he can sign a new contract because he proved in the recent weeks that he is able to play in the top level for us and it is a really good moment to show our support for him but I am also pleased that we have for the future because he is an important part of my plans.'
