Luciano Becchio has returned to Argentina and signed for hometown club Belgrano, after seeing his Norwich City contract ended a year early by mutual consent last month.

The tall striker has signed for Belgrano, who are currently in sixth place in the Argentinian top flight, Primera Division A.

The 31-year-old joins on a free transfer and has signed a one-year deal with Club Atlético Belgrano, based in the city where he was born, Córdoba.

Becchio joined the Canaries from Leeds United in January 2013 but never managed to score for the club and had his contract ended a year early following City's promotion to the Premier League.

He was signed by Chris Hughton having scored 19 goals in the first half of the season for Leeds but only started two matches during his City career, appearing as a substitute 14 times.

Belgrano have confirmed the deal, with Becchio speaking to the club's official website during a family holiday in Mallorca, saying: 'it was always my desire to play in the club but for various reasons we could not make it before. Belgrano know what it means and I'm really eager to play and show my conditions as a player.

'I am now in Mallorca with my family, and have a flight for Thursday. I will be arriving in Córdoba on Friday morning to officially introduce myself and join the group.'

Becchio scored two goals in five games for Rotherham in September of last season, before his loan spell with the Championship club was brought to an early end by a hairline fracture of his heel.

The striker did recover his fitness and was named on the substitutes bench by Canaries manager Alex Neil for April's clash with Sheffield Wednesday at Carrow Road, but was unused as City won 2-0 and was not named on the bench again during the closing months of his time in Norwich.

'Physically I'm fine,' Becchio continued. 'I was training with my former team until three weeks ago, and now I do personally to join Belgrano. I'm fully recovered from the injury I had in the ankle, and I'll just get to the technical.

'I'm a striker who heads well, I have power and good shot. I consider myself a hard worker for the team, I like to help in every way, even in defence.'
