It's been a season of change for Norwich City's academy but Matt Gill has 'absolutely loved' his first full season in charge of the under-23 squad.

The former Canaries midfielder took charge of the U23s during the latter stages of the previous campaign but saw his assistant, club legend Darren Huckerby, exit in October as part of cuts to academy staff.

Gill has pressed on as sporting director Stuart Webber has reshaped the academy in pursuit of a more efficient supply line for the first team, bringing in former Huddersfield colleague Steve Weaver as academy manager last September.

While the new strategy has meant several youngsters – such as Todd Cantwell and Diallang Jaiyesimi – have been out on loan, Gill is pleased with the part he is playing in the development of City's young talent.

'I've absolutely loved this season,' he said. 'There's obviously been loads and loads of change, which is part and parcel of being in football.

'I've tried to take everything that I possibly can from it. From the first-team point of view, they've been excellent with me, the boss (Daniel Farke), Eddie (Riemer, assistant), Christian (Domogolla, head of performance) and Chris (Fluthmann, coach), and Ed (Wooton) the goalie coach, they've been fantastic with myself and the 23s group.

'So that relationship is building and building, which is great for an under-23s coach. They're really open about everything, they've been fantastic.

'As far as my development is concerned, I'll look to keep improving and going in the right direction. But first full season as under-23s coach, I've loved every minute of it.'

Gill's squad beat Wolves 2-1 in their final Carrow Road game of the season on Sunday to move up to eighth in Division Two of Premier League Two.

They head to Aston Villa on Monday for their final game of the season, a 7pm kick-off at Villa Park, two points adrift of fifth and still with a slim chance of a play-off place.

'We definitely wanted to put to bed the two defeats we had previously (to Wolves) and try to finish the season on a strong note,' Gill added. 'So we now go into the final game of the season and look for another positive result.'
