Former Norwich City fans' favourite Kei Kamara has risked his cult status in Sierra Leone with a rant at supporters who stoned the national team's bus following their World Cup exit.

Kamara used his social media accounts to label a section of disgruntled fans 'a disgrace' in the wake of the recent 2-2 qualifying home draw against Tunisia in Freetown that ended the Leone Stars faint hopes of making Brazil next summer.

The 28-year-old, who endeared himself to City followers during a brief but memorable 11-game loan stint in Norwich's successful Premier League survival bid last season, opened the scoring for the hosts before Tunisia snatched a 90th minute equaliser after a mistake by Leone keeper Ibrahim Tarawallie.

Kamara was voted Sierra Leone's player-of-the-season before the fractious World Cup qualifier, but the striker was prepared to directly criticise the minority who attacked the team coach.

'This goes out to all the illiterate fans out on the streets stoning our bus. You're a disgrace to the nation,' he tweeted. 'It's always an honour to score for your national team, just wish we would have came out with all three points. We got to do better. #team Salone.'

The forward's public condemnation sparked a strong response from a cross-section of Leone fans.

One, Alhpa Kei, replied: 'I disagree, the fans were very angry because the equalizing goal was a foolish mistake from the goal keeper. If I was a coach of Leone Stars he will never play for the team again, his action was foolish and thus sparked anger from the fans.'

Kamara became the first Sierra Leone player to score in the Premier League when he inspired Norwich to a vital 2-1 win over Everton in February. The striker's heroics for parent club Sporting Kansas in the MLS prior to his Canaries' stint saw him poll more than 50% of the vote to lift his country's prestigious individual accolade.

'I'm pleased and excited to receive such an award, I really appreciate the award,' he said. 'This would not have happened without my colleagues and I want to say thanks to them. It's a blessing to be voted by fans and having an award like this is a big thing.'
