Steven Whittaker is 'close' to joining Hibernian, according to head coach Neil Lennon.

The Scotland international was one of seven players released by Norwich City at the end of the season and the 33-year-old is set for a return to his homeland.

'I think we are close with Steven Whittaker, although talks are still ongoing,' Lennon told BBC Scotland. 'That would be a great signing for us.'

Whittaker began his career with Hibs before moving to Rangers in 2007. He went on to join the Canaries on a free transfer in 2012 when the Ibrox club encountered financial difficulties.

After playing a key role in Alex Neil's promotion winning side in 2015 he fell out of favour in the Premier League and looked set to leave last summer.

However, he was surprisingly handed a new deal by the club and went on to make just 10 starts for Norwich last season with five more as a substitute.
