Scotland boss Steve Clarke has failed in his attempts to persuade ex-Norwich City goalkeeper Angus Gunn to switch his international allegiance from England to Scotland.
Gunn, son of City legend Bryan, has turned down the advances of Clarke in the hope of continuing his development with the England national team.
Since he first played for his country for the Under-16 squad, he has represented the Three Lions at every youth level, with a full-time call-up arriving during his loan stint at the Canaries in November 2017 after Jack Butland withdrew from the squad due to injury.
He was an unused substitute for that fixture against Brazil but has flirted with the senior team ever since.
He has a positive relationship with England boss Gareth Southgate that stems back to their time together in the Under-21s.
This isn't the first time Gunn has been approached by the Scottish national team, with ex-manager Alex McLeish also trying to persuade him to become involved with the Scottish squad during his reign as boss.
Bryan, who was capped six times for Scotland, said: "Immediately after Stevie was appointed manager he contacted us asking if Angus would change his mind and play for Scotland in the future.
"Angus has been involved with England at different levels and decided that this was the course he wanted to stay on in the future."
Gunn made 46 appearances for City during Daniel Farke's first season as City boss in 2017-18, where his impressive form captured the attention of Premier League suitors.
His form was rewarded with a move to Southampton, where he has fought to establish himself as the number one goalkeeper at St Mary's.
Alex McCarthy - an internationally recognised goalkeeper - is his competition, but Gunn has been Ralph Hassenhuttl's shot-stopper of choice since his arrival as manager in December 2018.
"Linking up with Southampton and the opportunities available was also a big move for Angus". Said Bryan when speaking to the Scottish Sun.
"I can understand his thinking in this respect as he has a big future in the game.
"He is only 23 and obviously he is still learning. Playing for Southampton in the Premier League is a very big honour.
"It is also obvious that all the England goalkeepers play in the Premier League."
