Former Canaries striker Chris Sutton could enjoy similar success to Paul Lambert if he gives management another try, according to one of his former Celtic team-mates.

Sutton has been made favourite to become the new manager of Scottish Premier League side Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Caley are searching for a new boss after Terry Butcher joined Hibs last week and three major bookmakers have installed Sutton as favourite, with Kilmarnock boss Kenny Shiels and former Malaga boss Antonio Tapia close behind.

Sutton, who has recently pulled on his football boots again to play alongside his son for Cromer Town, had an unsuccessful 12 months as manager at Lincoln City until he resigned in September 2010, citing ‘personal reasons’.

The chance to take over at Caley could be tempting for Sutton however, as the Inverness club are currently second in the Scottish Premier League and five points behind Celtic after a strong start to the season under Butcher.

Sutton, now 40 years old, was interviewed for the position before Butcher’s appointment in January 2009.

He has been backed for the job by his former Celtic team-mate, Rab Douglas, who said: “He’s got great experience and at my time at Celtic he was a thinker, someone who asked Martin O’Neill or John Robertson why we were doing things or playing certain formations.

“He didn’t have the greatest time at Lincoln, it has probably made him a better manager. It is the same as Paul Lambert, he didn’t have the greatest time at Livingston and look how far he has went on.

“He was always close to Martin O’Neill and John Robertson and they would be great sounding boards for him and he would love it.”
