Norwich City legend Wes Hoolahan is excited to get his spell with West Brom up and running after being offered a ‘fantastic’ opportunity by manager Darren Moore.
The playmaker has joined the Baggies on a short-term deal until January, which could be extended further if the move works out, after his 10-year stint with City came to an end last season.
He made his debut on Tuesday night during a 4-2 home win over Bristol City, replacing Dwight Gayle in the 74th minute of the Championship fixture.
“It’s been a long time since I had a trial,” the Irishman joked, “but I am really grateful to the gaffer for the opportunity he offered me to come up and spend some time here.
“And it is a great opportunity for me to be back in the Championship with such a strong squad.
“I still feel I have plenty to offer. I retired from international football in March with the intention of kicking on and playing as many games as possible at club level.
“I’ve had a good summer’s rest and now I am really excited about playing again. To get the opportunity to do so with a club such as this one is fantastic for me.”
Hoolahan scored 54 goals in 352 appearances for the Canaries after signing from Blackpool for just £250,000 back in 2008 and went on to play in the Premier League for four seasons, twice being promoted from the Championship.
Moore has added the creative player to his squad as the Baggies try to set up an immediate return to the top flight.
“There’s a lot of Premier League quality here and I would like to think the boys will be right in the thick of the promotion challenge,” the 36-year-old added, speaking to West Brom’s website.
“I feel in good shape and with plenty of football in me still. The days are gone now when players reached my age and were regarded as finished. You keep on top of things and with all the advances we benefit from now you can easily play into your late 30s.”
The Baggies have already played at Carrow Road this season, winning 4-3, and are due to host City at The Hawthorns on Saturday, January 12.
Moore’s team host Bristol City in the Championship this evening, with Hoolahan potentially set for a debut having not been involved in Friday night’s 1-1 derby draw at Birmingham.
