His touchline actions saw him become a global sensation online – and now David ‘Spud’ Thornhill is returning to Carrow Road action.
The diehard Canaries fan emerged from the City Stand crowd to step in as fourth official during the 1-1 Championship draw with Preston in November, after one of the linesmen went down injured.
His beaming smile as he lifted up the electronic board to signal 10 minutes of added time went viral on social media and ensured the Norwich Evening News columnist has gone down in Canaries folklore.
Spud will resume his fourth official role at Carrow Road on Sunday for the fund-raising exhibition between Norwich City Legends and Inter Forever in aid of the Community Sports Foundation (2pm kick-off), assisting some top-level officials.
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher will take charge of the game. The Irishman, who refereed more than 1,200 professional games over a 22-year career, will be ably supported by assistant referees Darren Cann and John Busby.
Gallagher was chosen as one of the original referees when the Premier League was founded, and became a Fifa listed referee between 1994 and 2002. He now regularly contributes as a television pundit.
Norwich-born Cann, who lives in Poringland, is an international-level assistant referee, who has officiated at some of the most famous games in recent football history including the 2006 FA Cup final between Liverpool and West Ham, the 2010 Champions League final, and the 2010 World Cup Final between Netherlands and Spain in South Africa.
Joining Cann on the touchline will be Busby, a League One and Two referee, who has been officiating at Football League level for two full seasons.
