Norwich City striker Carlton Morris hopes he never has to feel the pain of Wembley defeat again, after Shrewsbury Town lost out on Championship promotion.

The 22-year-old's season on loan at Shrewsbury ended with a second defeat under the arch in seven weeks, as Paul Warne's Rotherham United earned play-off final promotion from League One on Sunday.

That followed on from the Shrews' Checkatrade Trophy final loss to Lincoln in April, and this time came with a knee injury that could yet impact on Morris' summer.

'I tried my best to stay on the pitch because you don't want to miss out on opportunities like this – especially because we'd just got a goal back into the game, I felt myself coming into the game a bit more, and then I just couldn't carry on,' said Morris, who tried three times to run off the knock.

'The early assessments the physios have given me aren't great, but I'm sure we'll look into it in more detail over the next few days.

'I was saying to one of the lads before the game, these are the occasions we play football for. They are the best days if they go your way, and I really feel like if I had stayed on the pitch it would have. So it did hurt coming off like that and being forced off.

'It has been a good season but if I'm being honest with you, the feeling of losing here hurts like nothing I've ever had before – and to do it twice in the same season is an unbelievable feeling. It hurts deep in your core. Hopefully I'll get the positive experience here one day.'

Fellow City loanee Ben Godfrey played 120 minutes of a pulsating final – and ended it slumped with his face in the hallowed turf, as Norwich's own Warne led the Millers to an immediate Championship return.

'I'm absolutely gutted, for the boys especially and the whole club and fans,' added Godfrey. 'There's been so much effort put into this year but football is a cruel industry and sometimes you don't get what you want.

'I want to say a massive thanks to every single person involved here. The staff, players, fans, they've brought me on leaps and bounds on and off the field. I feel like I've changed and matured as a person, and enjoyed every second of my time here. There will always be a place for Shrewsbury Town in my heart.

'It's been a massive part of my career and I'll never forget it. I've learned things here that will hopefully take me to that next level, and I have to say a massive thanks to the club.

'I can't praise them enough and any young players out there wanting to go out on loan, you have to come to this cub because it brings you on leaps and bounds.'
