Moving to England was a ‘dream’ for incoming Norwich City signing Emi Buendia.

The 21-year-old attacker has been a star of the Spanish second tier while on loan at Leonesa, after struggling to nail down a starting place for Getafe.

The exciting Argentine was part of the Getafe team which slipped out of La Liga in 2016 as a teenager but was allowed to go out on loan after his parent club bounced back to the top flight at the first attempt.

“Emi’s dream has always been to play in England so I am sure that he will adapt and he will do his best,” said Juancar Navacerrada, who reports on Getafe for Madrid-based sports newspaper Marca.

Buendia, who was on Real Madrid’s books for a year as a youngster, made his senior debut for Getafe as a 19-year-old and went on to make 21 appearances in the top flight for the La Liga minnows.

That included two chastening 6-0 defeats at Barcelona when the full force of stars including Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez was felt to full effect – Buendia having to, rather harshly, play at right-back in the second of those drubbings in December 2016.

“He is a player who needed something away from Getafe and he has achieved that,” Navacerrada explained. “It will be a great success for the team where he goes next season, if he is not going to stay at Getafe.

“Emi is a player who was not a starter in the Second Division with Getafe, so it does not surprise me that they would sell him.”

The Canaries are expected to confirm the signing of the tricky attacking player in the coming weeks, with Fifa’s international transfer window opening for business tomorrow.

City are understood to have agreed a deal worth around £1.5m during the January transfer window, when Swansea and Leeds were among the British clubs also interested, while Buendia has gone on to continue shining for Leonesa.

The former Argentina Under-20 international, who has a dual Spanish passport, finished the campaign with seven goals and 11 assists from 42 games in all competitions – to be voted player of the season by fans as his loan club slipped to relegation.

Navacerrada added: “He has improved a lot in the defensive section this season, has sacrificed and has improved a lot in that sense in León.”
