Norwich City’s players are understood to be returning to training in small groups from today, as a report suggests that none of the club’s players or staff have tested positive for coronavirus.

The next batch of results are due to be announced by the Premier League on Saturday, following six positives among 748 that were carried out, which were announced on Tuesday.

Those positive tests were at three clubs, which has emerged as two members of staff and defender Adrian Mariappa at Watford and Burnley assistant manager Ian Woan, with the remaining club not yet being revealed.

Clubs had 40 players and staff tested at a time but have reportedly asked that to be increased to 50 moving forward, with testing set to be held twice a week.

Norwich’s players and staff were tested on Tuesday however so their results have not yet been published, although The Telegraph report that all of the Canaries’ tests have returned as negative.

It’s understood that will allow City to step up their training procedures as part of Step One of the top-flight’s Return to Training Protocol, which were voted through on Monday, as football’s suspension closes on 10 weeks amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

That is not a drastic change, as Daniel Farke’s players had already been able to use the Lotus Training Centre for individual sessions in recent weeks, under strict hygiene and social distancing guidelines.

But it will allow small groups of up to five players to train together at Colney, still with no contact in place and stringent guidelines to combat any outbreak of the virus, such as equipment being regularly disinfected and players arriving and leaving in training kit, with no access to changing or canteen facilities.

It’s understood a maximum of 10 players will be allowed to train at once, split onto different pitches and for 75-minute sessions, as the Canaries step up their preparations for a potential restart of fixtures on June 12.

Clubs will reportedly vote on Step Two of the Return to Training Protocol next week, which will allow for a return to full contact training later this month, still using the sterile conditions and using as many precautions as possible.

Premier League clubs have been posting photos of their players stepping up training in recent days, including Southampton, with their players wearing snoods over their mouths as a form of added protection.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp revelled in a return to training on Wednesday for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic brought football to a standstill in mid-March for the runaway leaders.

Klopp said on Liverpool’s official website: “The morning started already really well - I woke up even earlier than usual, and then I realised it is my first day.

“It felt like the first day at school; for me, it was 46 years ago, but it must have been similar. I dressed myself in my uniform again - and for the right reason, for going to training.

“I drove to Melwood and was really happy to see all the boys. I didn’t see all the boys yet, I only saw 10 of them and the coaches, which is a good start, I would say. They all look in good spirits.

“We started with training, good things, not the highest intensity but the boys look in good shape.”
