Korey Smith admitted knocking Manchester United out of the League Cup was one of the greatest moments of his life.

City's former League One title winner and academy starlet settled a thrilling 2-1 quarter-final tie for Bristol City at a raucous Ashton Gate on Wednesday night.

The Robins' reward is a two-legged semi-final against runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City next month.

The 26-year-old Smith is also poised to face his old club next month in the Championship, with third-placed Bristol City firmly in the hunt for promotion going into the festive period.

Smith made 73 senior apearances for Norwich but left Carrow Road in 2013 after a series of loan spells as he slipped down the pecking order under Paul Lambert and then Chris Hughton when the Canaries reached the top flight.

The combative midfielder, however, revealed after his League Cup heroics he is part of something special brewing in the West Country.

'Absolutely unbelievable. I don't even know what to say. Greatest night of my life? Yes, apart from my sons being born I would have to say so,' said Smith, speaking to SkySports. 'The lads were brilliant. Same as all season.

'I don't score many but it was a dream come true. A few times I made a run in behind and I wasn't being tracked so I said to the boys at half-time to look for me and play it in.

'I joined when we were in League One and we had three stands. We had a great season and the next couple we were down near the bottom but this season we are right up there, the recruitment has been brilliant.

'We have a lot of young lads. The stadium is now amazing and it is nice to give the fan a season they can remember.

'I am an Arsenal fan so I would have liked Arsenal but it is just amazing to be in the draw with three of the best country. We have beaten four Premier League teams to get here. It is a great squad effort.'
