McLean was one of City's five January signings before returning to Pittodrie to finish this season and then link up with his new club in the summer.

The 26-year-old revealed he spoke to Maddison prior to moving south, but believes the England Under-21 international will be in huge demand this summer after being heavily touted with Premier League clubs last month.

'I'd spoken to James Maddison about Norwich in the last couple of weeks – but with the way things are going for him I don't think he'll be there to play with,' he said.

'Madders showed his quality up here and he just went down there and kicked on. He's shown what a player he can be and he's just taken his game to the next level.

'When you look at things like that, that's what you strive for and that's what I'll be looking to do.

'But it's a long way to go until I get there. It's all about the next few months at Aberdeen and hopefully finishing really strongly.'

McLean got good vibes from Daniel Farke and the Canaries when he was weighing up his options.

'But I've sorted my future so now I think I can relax a bit, enjoy my football and just work as hard as I can.

'When I was down at Norwich it just felt right for me. I watched them a few times and the way the manager wants to play suits me.

'I had a look about the place and I just think it's a good fit. I've said for a while it was time for a fresh challenge.

'It's right for me to move on at this stage of my career and the manager's been excellent with me ever since I made my decision.

'Both parties are happy with how the situation has panned out. It's just about focusing on Aberdeen now.'
