Adam Idah had a penalty saved as the Republic of Ireland's brave bid to set-up a semi-final against England in the U17 European Championships ended in a 5-4 penalty shoot-out defeat to Holland, after the sides had finished level at 1-1.
Idah took the first penalty in the shoot out at Chesterfield but Dutch keeper Joey Koorevaar guessed correctly to parry the teenager's low strike around his right-hand post.
The next eight penalties were all scored until Republic keeper James Corcoran appeared to have denied Chelsea's highly-rated forward Daishawn Redan.
But Czech refereee Zbynek Proske adjudged Corcoran had come off his line before the crucial penalty was struck and produced a second yellow card for the distraught Irish keeper.
Redan kept his composure to slot the re-taken effort past centre back Oisin McEntee to set up a semi-final tussle against hosts England on Thursday.
Incensed senior Republic of Ireland boss Martin O'Neill, in the crowd with his assistant Roy Keane, went onto the field to remonstrate with the official who was then swiftly led away down the tunnel.
Liam Van Gelderen's thumping close range header had opened the scoring for the Dutch, who dominated territory and possession, but Tottenham's Troy Parrott levelled in the 64th minute from a move started by Canaries' starlet Idah.
The 17-year-old had little opportunity to add to his nine goals in the entire tournament, as he suffered another quarter-final exit after losing to England at the same stage last season.
Idah has trained regularly with Daniel Farke's first team squad during recent months after being fast-tracked through the club's academy set-up.
'I'm loving it at Norwich. I have played (for the) U18s throughout the season, and I have played a couple of games for the U23,' he told City's official site, prior to the tie.
'At the moment, it has been very successful for me, I won U18s player-of-the-year and academy player-oif-the-year so the season has been very good.
'Hopefully when I go back next season I will have a good start again.
'We have to play against the best players in Europe, so that will help me a lot. But I have got to go back in pre-season and just do the best I can.'
