Norwich City supporter Jed Steer is one game from joining the Canaries in the Premier League after his spot kick heroics helped Aston Villa beat West Brom in the Championship play-off semi-final.

The former City academy prospect saved two penalties in the sudden death shoot out at the Hawthorns after the sides finished 2-2 on aggregate after extra-time.

"There is a lot of luck involved but I am just thankful we got through," said Steer, who missed out on a reunion against his old club through injury on the final day of the regular season when Daniel Farke's side clinched the title. "We have been practising penalties so I must have faced about a 100 of them a day for the last few days.

"Nice to make a couple of saves but the boys did what they had to do. We feel this could be our year. We are playing nice football. We are well up for it. Bring on Wembley."

Tammy Abraham struck the decisive spot kick for Dean Smith's side to set up a Wembley play-off final date against either Leeds or Derby.

"What a keeper. What a keeper," said the on-loan Chelsea forward. "I have missed a couple against him in training. But we were all confident. I am used to that of pressure. I like it. It wasn't down to me. It was down to Jed. He saved us."

Steer has only established himself as Villa's number one over the second part of the season, following a series of loan stints in recent years. The 26-year-old linked up with Paul Lambert at Villa Park in 2013 after the Scot had given Steer his first team breakthrough at Carrow Road.

But speaking ahead of City's final day league visit earlier this month, Steer revealed he still has a soft spot for his first club.

"Norwich is my hometown club and I always want to see them do well," he said.

"Obviously my focus is on us going up. If we can follow them into the Premier League, I'd be delighted."

"The last couple of years have been very stop-start for me. I had a couple of serious injuries but, in all honesty, they've only made me stronger mentally. I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason."
