Norwich City defender Grant Hanley has withdrawn from the Scotland squad for Tuesday's friendly against Hungary.

Hanley is ruled out with shin splints and has already returned to his club for further assessment from City's medical staff, after playing the full 90 minutes in Friday's 1-0 defeat to Costa Rica at Hampden Park.

The Scottish FA tweeted the news on Monday morning and is expected to provide a further update later today when new national boss Alex McLeish holds his pre-match press call in Budapest ahead of the midweek friendly.

Hanley, Manchester United's Scott McTominay and Newcastle United's Matt Ritchie have all been ruled out for the trip.

'Grant has gone because he has shin splints so can't play two games in a week,' said McLeish, speaking to The Scotsman. 'We had agreed that beforehand. 'Matt Ritchie is also away because he has a groin problem and has to go back to Newcastle for treatment but we have a few options for that position.'

City return to action after the international break on Good Friday when they host promotion-chasing Fulham in the Championship at Carrow Road.

Hanley has emerged as a key figure in Daniel Farke's squad and has been an ever-present in recent months.

Another of Norwich's international contingent, Angus Gunn, did not play for England's U21s on Saturday with a back problem but is expected to be in contention for Tuesday's European Championship qualifier against the Ukraine at Bramall Lane.
