Daniel Farke admitted the tears were flowing as Wes Hoolahan bowed out as a winner for Norwich City with an inspired display in a 2-1 Championship victory over Leeds.

The Irish midfielder scored his first league goal of the season in his 352nd and final competitive outing for the Canaries.

Hoolahan’s deflected strike cancelled out Kalvin Phillips’ opener, before teeing up Josh Murphy in the second half to seal the win.

The tearful 35-year-old left the pitch in the closing stages to a standing ovation and hugs from players, Farke and backroom staff.

“There were a lot of tears,” said the head coach. “Normally he is in a good mood, with a smile on his face but when we met this morning you could see his face was pretty wide and he was very nervous.

“That is a sign of his character.

“He is nearly 36, had so many games and yet he was still nervous and wanted to be there with a good performance. He plays with all his heart and his passion.

“A perfect day. If I had been allowed to paint the last home game like this I would have done so. It was difficult, and falling behind to the first strike on goal but we turned the game, came back and played well in the second half.

“To have Wes doing that in his final game and so crucial in such a great atmosphere, to score his first league goal of the season and an assist, it was brilliant.

“It was important for me as well to finish at home on a high for the confidence and for next season. We can now take that mood into the summer break.”
