Championship new boys Burton Albion will try to avoid the same issues that saw Norwich City relegated from the Premier League – says Brewers boss Nigel Clough.

Albion will play in the second tier for the first time in their history after a historic automatic promotion from League One on the final Sunday of the Football League campaign.

The day before, Norwich suffered a home defeat to Manchester United live on BT Sport that effectively made their survival mission impossible.

And a watching Clough took note of the occasion and its coverage.

'I was watching Norwich against Manchester United and Trevor Francis was commentating when they were saying 'It looks like Norwich are going down again',' said Clough.

'He made the point Norwich have some very, very good Championship players – but if you have too many of them then, invariably you will end up back in the Championship. And I think that's true of any level of football, so we have got to be careful. We'll be loyal to the lads, they'll have an opportunity but even then, deep inside, we will recognise we need to get some Championship players on the pitch to give us a chance.

'Even saying that, we can spend all our budget, do everything and it still might not be enough.

'MK Dons did as much but they finished short. They tried to play a certain way but you look at Preston – they finished in the top half, were solid and have people who can score goals. That's the difference.'
