Second-half goals from Andrew Surman and Anthony Pilkington gave Norwich City an impressive home victory over Bolton Wanderers as they completed their second Premier League double of the season.

The Canaries shrugged off the loss of both centre-halves through injury in the first half to take all three points at a bitterly cold Carrow Road, bouncing back in style from their midweek defeat at Sunderland.

Surman, who had hit the crossbar in the first half, struck first after 70 minutes when he volleyed home after his initial shot from Simeon Jackson's cross was blocked by Bolton defender David Wheater. It was his fourth goal of the season.

Pilkington wrapped up the points five minutes from time, scoring from a rebound after defender Russell Martin's shot was saved by goalkeeper Adam Bogdan.

Martin, making his 100th appearance for the club, came on as a substitute for the injured Daniel Ayala in the first half, when City also lost Zak Whitbread to injury.

Martin and Kyle Naughton formed an impromptu central defensive partnership that held firm in the second period, while winger Elliott Bennett had to play at right-back.

City boss Paul Lambert made four changes after the 3-0 midweek defeat at Sunderland with recalls for Adam Drury, David Fox, Anthony Pilkington and Simeon Jackson.

Martin was made to wait a while for his 100th senior appearance as he was relegated to the bench alongside Bradley Johnson, Andrew Crofts and Steve Morison.

Bolton made one change after the 0-0 draw against Arsenal with Tyrone Mears included at right-back in place of the injured Gretar Steinsson.

New 3m signing from Watford, Marvin Sordell, was named among the substitutes.

Bogdan had to come out to claim a cross from Pilkington in the second minute after some neat approach play by City and as Bolton switched to the attack, Ngog tumbled on the edge of the Norwich area under pressure from Ayala, but there was no hint of a foul.

Eagles ruined a promising Bolton move in the ninth minute when he crossed high and wide from the right.

Jackson earned City their first corner a minute later, Whitbread's header from Fox's kick striking Mears on its way out for another flag-kick. This time Holt attempted a near post header from Fox's kick, but it was blocked.

A foul on Surman gave the Canaries a free-kick some 25 yards out but Fox drove it straight into the wall.

Holt went closest yet to breaking the deadlock in the 14th minute when he met Jackson's cross with a volley that Bogdan saved, moving to his right, after good work by Pilkington created the opening. Then Jackson shot across goal from Surman's pass after determined work by the midfielder.

Jackson forced Bogdan into action again after latching on to Holt's flick-on and springing the offside trap, but the angle was tight and he might have done better to square the ball to Surman.

There was a problem for City after 21 minutes when centre-back Ayala went down clutching the back of his right leg and had to be ushered off by physio Neal Reynolds, to be replaced by Russell Martin.

Surman missed a golden chance to give the Canaries the lead in the 24th minute when Holt knocked Hoolahan's cross into his path in the six-yard box, but hitting it right footed he got underneath the ball and struck the bar.

Bolton won their first corner three minutes later, Petrov's kick getting cleared as far as Muamba, whose long-range effort was comfortably wide.

A few passes too many on the edge of the Bolton area ended when Fox fired well wide as City struggled to find the final ball.

Pilkington curled a free-kick over the top from the left corner of the Bolton area, but there was more defensive concern when Whitbread needed treatment for what looked like another major problem.

Whitbread went off and City were down to 10 men with Martin and Drury temporarily operating at centre-back.

Five minutes before the break, Bennett came on to play at right-back with Naughton switching to the centre alongside Martin in the absence of the two original centre-halves.

Petrov whistled a shot just wide, via a deflection, as Bolton sensed an opening.

A foul in stoppage time by Holt gave Bolton a free-kick 25 yards out, but Petrov's dead-ball attempt struck the wall.

• Half-time: Norwich City 0, Bolton Wanderers 0

Holt missed a great chance within a minute of the restart when Drury crossed from the left but he completely misdirected his header.

Jackson was inches away from giving City the lead when Holt flicked on Martin's through-ball and he whistled his shot just past the post.

Jackson was looking lively and glanced a header just off target from Hoolahan's cross after a splendid pass by Fox.

Ngog tested Ruddy with a smart shot on the turn before Bolton replaced Muamba with an extra striker in Kevin Davies.

Petrov fired across the face of the goal as Bolton stepped up their efforts to get the opening goal.

Holt volleyed into the crowd after Surman and Hoolahan battled well to rob Reo-Coker.

Jackson was a major player in City's second half efforts and turned neatly on to Surman's pass but his final shot just lacked the power to trouble Bogdan.

Hoolahan fired over midway through the half but the breakthrough finally came with 20 minutes to go.

Jackson did well again to get in a cross from the right from Fox's pass and though Surman's first effort struck Wheater, he quickly volleyed the rebound past Bogdan.

Bolton sent on Tuncay for Eagles before City made their final change, Morison replacing Jackson, who had been down with cramp moments earlier.

Ruddy made fine save to keep out Petrov's piledriver 11 minutes from time.

Holt might have made it 2-0 when he diverted Pilkington's cross over the top after the winger played a one-two with Surman.

Then Pilkington's shot from Holt's pass was blocked on the line by Mears, although the linesman was flagging.

Bolton replaced Ngog with new signing Sordell for the final eight minutes but it was City who struck again through Pilkington with five minutes remaining.

Russell Martin, still up with the attack after a corner, had his shot saved by Bogdan but Pilkington followed up to net from the rebound.

Surman shot wide from Morison's pass as City looked for a third.

Petrov fired wide for Bolton in time added on, but the Canaries were home and dry.
