Belief is the key for Norwich City as they prepare to hit the Premier League high road, according the Andrew Surman.

The Canaries will have plenty to get their teeth stuck into in the run to November as they take on the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool – kicking-off with Sunday's trek to face Newcastle United at St James' Park.

City have been as solid as you like in recent weeks but profligate with their chances, hence heading north at the weekend with the monkey of an elusive first top-flight victory this season still on their back.

However, Surman is confident the Canaries' foundations are sound enough to ensure they will be fine – over the next five games and the rest of the season.

'The performances are there and the positives are there – we are creating chances and we've started keeping clean sheets, so that is a good basis,' said Surman. 'We just need to take our chances and I'm sure we will be all right.

'We are looking very good defensively and we have got a good shape about us, and the positive thing about us is we are still creating chances in that shape and from that shape, so we've just got to keep it going and keep believing in what we are doing and what the manager is trying to do here.

'We have tough games coming up but people said that before the game at Spurs and they didn't really expect us to get anything from there.

'We will go into every game believing we can win it. We went to Liverpool last season and got a 1-1 draw, fully deserved, and we will go into the next game at Newcastle believing that we're going to get something. We should have beaten Spurs, we should have beaten QPR a few weeks ago and again it was probably two points dropped against West Ham. You don't want to keep saying it, but we will go in and play these so called big teams and believe we've got every chance of beating them.

'We have got to keep believing. We are still looking for that win, and I am sure we will get it soon. I'm sure once we start hitting the back of the net we will win more games than we lose. Three points so far is not a true reflection of how we've played.

'We should probably have a least three more points – but as long as the performances are there and the confidence is there and we keep believing, I'm sure that will turn around.'

On a personal note, Surman was glad to be back involved at the weekend in City's goalless draw with the Hammers.

It was his first Premier League start since the opening day disappointment at Fulham.

'I was hoping to build on last season, playing 25 games, and I wanted to start the season in the starting XI – unfortunately it's not really happened for me, but when you do get chances you've go to try to take them,' he added. 'That's my first proper 90 minutes in the Premier League for a little while, so I started to get a bit leggy towards the end but I was pleased with my performance.'

City will also head to the north east with their remarkable run of having not picked up a single card from a referee this season – and Surman denied the statistic means the Canaries have become a soft touch.

'We've got aggressive players in our team – just because they don't get booked, doesn't mean they are not; maybe they're sensible, aggressive players,' smiled Surman.

'The booking ratio has nothing to do with the fact we've missing good chances. We will keep doing what we are doing and we will always fight in every game, and see if we can win them.'
