The Canaries issued a statement on Monday afternoon reiterating the ownership of the club is unaffected and the search for new directors is on-going.

The statement read: 'Norwich City can confirm Alan Bowkett has stepped down from his position as chairman and director of the club.

'Mr Bowkett joined the board of directors in 2009 and the directors and all at Norwich City football club would like to place on record their thanks to Alan for his contribution.

'The club has been working recently to refresh the board of directors and an announcement about new directors and a new chairman will be made in the next few weeks. The ownership of the club will be unaffected by these changes.

'The new directors will bring additional expertise and fresh ideas about growing the business, as Norwich City continues its commitment to maintaining Premier League status and developing the Football club on and off the pitch.'

Bowkett was appointed chairman of the club in July 2009 and was a key figure in stabilising the Canaries' financial position following relegation to League One. The lifelong Norwich fan was a successful businessman who held leading roles at a number of British and European companies before joining the Norwich board.

Bowkett was re-elected to the board last month at the annual meeting held at Carrow Road and along with chief executive David McNally formally presented the last set of club accounts in October.
