Norwich City right-back Max Aarons played 45 minutes as his international duty came to a disappointing end, with the England U19s missing out on qualification for this summer’s U19 European Championship.

Aarons made his third appearance of the break, making his second start as he earned his seventh cap at U19 level – with qualification on the line for Keith Downing’s team against Denmark this afternoon.

The Canaries star played all of a 4-1 win over the Czech Republic last Wednesday, as the Football Association’s St George’s Park headquarters in Burton hosted Group Two of the Elite Round of qualifying for this summer’s finals in Armenia.

However, a surprise 2-1 defeat to Greece on Saturday, in which Aarons came on in the 65th minute, left the Greeks in the driving seat for qualification.

The City full-back was replaced by Manchester City prospect Ian Poveda at the break, with the Danes leading 1-0, with another of the players in regular first-team action for their club, Morgan Gibbs-White of Wolves also replaced.

It was a 41st match of the season for the 19-year-old but he then had to watch on from the sidelines as his replacement, Poveda, scored an equaliser in the 63rd minute.

Another leveller was needed form Chelsea defender Marc Guehi 10 minutes later but a 2-2 draw didn’t prove to be enough, with the Czech Republic beating Greece 3-1 to finish top of the group.

While Aarons will not have an U19 tournament to look forward to, he can target joining City team-mate Ben Godfrey in the England U20s for the prestigious Toulon Tournament in France in June, while the U21s also have the European Championship in June, in Italy and San Marino.

He returns his focus to Championship action for now though, ahead of Saturday evening’s televised game at Middlesbrough for Daniel Farke’s league leaders.

The youngster was the first of four City players potentially in international action today, with Teemu Pukki starting for Finland in Armenia at 5pm.
