Tim Pendle from Norwich Canoe Club has staked his claim for the Rio 2016 Olympics with a win in the senior men's 1,000 metres K2 National Championship.

The 24-year-old took the glory at the Senior A National and Open Championship Regatta at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham on Saturday.

With partner Andy Daniels, from Longridge Canoe Club in Buckinghamshire, the pair beat off strong opposition as they came from one length down in the last 200m to edge the win by more than a second.

Pendle, who claimed the man's national marathon title as well as raced in K2 at the World Championships for Team GB in Copenhagen last year, is now in firm contention to be in the GB squad for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

To round off a perfect weekend he then won a second National Championship medal in the K4 1000 meters race on Sunday.

At the same regatta, Lucy Lee-Smith from Norwich Canoe Club was selected for the junior girls GB K4 squad, after she put in some storming performances in the U18 girls 500m and 200m races, finishing in the top three when aged just 16.

Tim Scott, spokesman for Norwich Canoe Club, said: 'It's an impressive feather in the cap for these athletes and all the coaching staff at Norwich Canoe Club who have put in place one of the most advanced coaching structures in the country, partly as a result of having two GB sprint coaches permanently based at the club.'
