Annual North Walsham Sevens brings curtain down on the season

The annual Dardan Security Rugby Sevens and Beer Festival takes place at North Walsham this Sunday.

The event, sponsored for the third year by the Norwich based security specialists, promises to be a feast of fast running rugby, with up to 20 men's teams and up to six women's teams invited to take part.

The first game kicks off at 11am and the rugby goes on all day.

A full complement of teams is expected, many of whom have competed before, as well as some exciting new entrants, including great representation from Norfolk clubs and specialist sevens teams from various parts of the country.

The Dardan Sevens is a local qualifier for the England Rugby Secure Trading 24 Sevens Series, with the winners competing for a place in the regional play-offs on July 7 in Birmingham, where they will compete for a place in the national finals at The Rec, home of Bath Rugby, on July 28.

The Norfolk beer festival will feature up to 20 beers, plus Norfolk ciders while the Red Lion Coltishall Double Decker Bus Bar wll also be available along with a pizza bar and hog roast.

Prior to the men's final, there will be a charity 'boat race' in which all spectators are invited to take part, which will aim to stretch the entire length of the first team pitch.

The tournament runs until around 7pm. Each seven-a-side game lasts seven minutes each way and games will be played concurrently on three pitches, providing spectators with plenty to see.

The Men's Open Cup finalists will play for The Jill Hambling Cup and a first prize of £750, with the runners-up receiving £250.

The Men's Social Plate finalists will play for the Vikings Plate and a first prize of £350, with the runners-up receiving £150.

The Women's Open Shield finalists will play for the George Campbell Shield and a first prize of £350, with the runners-up receiving £150.

Entry is £5 per person, which includes parking.
