Great Yarmouth Cycling Club chairman Norman Harlow was surprised by an extra item on the end of the his club's awards night programme – he was presented with life membership in recognition of his 30-odd years service to the club in many different capacities.
On the road he has at some time held all the club records from 10 miles to 100 miles – with the longer ones still unbeaten.
Nowadays he leads the club's weekend clubruns and is the timekeeper at their popular summer evening club events on the Somerleyton circuit.
He has been club chairman for the past 20 years and served for many years on the district committee of Cycling Time Trials.
Perhaps his greatest virtue, as a member of his club's 'old guard', has been to work with energetic younger members with new ideas, towards the lasting benefit of the club as a whole.
A long list of club award winners was headed by Best All-Rounders Julian Claxton and Brian Averre and Ladies Shield winner Jennie Anderson.
The CC Breckland 10 at Hingham and the Crest Road Race were both victims of the weather – though the 'Ten' has been re-scheduled for Saturday, April 21.
King's Lynn time trialist Matthew Senter of Team VeloVelocity is the new King of the Sporting Courses East (SPOCO) competition, topping the Senior 2017 rankings and ending a seven-year period when Daniel Bloy and Mark Arnold have vied for the top position. Bloy is 2017 runner-up while third spot goes to new entry Leon West of Cycle Club Sudbury.
Heading the Ladies Senior rankings for the third time is Verity Smith of the Stowmarket and District club while Kay Burgess (King's Lynn CC) is in second place.
For a remarkable ninth time Wymondham rider Chris Nudds tops the 60-70 age group while his CC Breckland clubmate Nick Parravani wins the 70-plus category.
David Proctor from King's Lynn is first among the 50-60 year olds while Suffolk coast resident Stuart Fairweather is best among the 'young' veterans – the 40-50 age group.
Senter, Bloy and Fairweather are the counters in the winning VeloVelocity team.
