The Norfolk Athletics Track & Field Championships was a two-day feast of athletics with something for everyone.
The top individual performance came from shot putter Sophie McKinna. It says much that when she was asked what her next competition would be after the Commonwealth Games she replied: 'The Norfolk Championships.'
True to her word the Yarmouth athlete improved her own county record with an outstanding distance of 17m 02.
It was the throwers who provided many of the best performances. Callum Brown, another top 10 ranked athlete, set a new senior hammer record of 68m 95.
Declan Manning set a new Great British F20 record in the hammer of 36m 19. Another fine throw came from Oliver Massingham in the under 20 men's discus with an excellent distance of 51m 54 to place him in the top five in the country.
There were many fine performances on the track too. Pride of place must go to Abbie Durand of the North Norfolk Harriers club. She set new records in both the under 17 1500m and 3000m. Her time in the 3,000m of 9:59 was outstanding from the schools international. The 1500m also saw three athletes beat the old record. Jack White, running with senior athletes, in another fine race, set a new under 20 5000m record of 15:05.5.
Another throw that must be mentioned is that of former English Schools champion Elspeth Jamieson. Her javelin throw of 43m 06 beat the oldest championship record of the lot, going back to 1956.
Serena Grace won three sprint titles, the best of which was a 25.9 200m. Eleanor Brown set an under 17 triple jump record of 11m 04 whilst Bure Valley's Faith Viney won both the women's 1500m and 5000m.
Alfie Williams from West Norfolk had a fine throw of 13m 38 in the under 17 shot and Thetford's Cameron Try threw the discus out to 39m 07.
The county championships were more than just about setting records as they were about participation and inclusion too.
Not only were there over 400 athletes entered, there were events for the hugely enthusiastic special Olympics group.
There was also a demonstration 400m wheelchair event and a demonstration by para Olympic shot putter Danny Nobbs as well as a para 100m event.
All athletes mentioned in the report were members of City of Norwich AC unless otherwise stated. The championships were organised by Athletics Norfolk with the assistance of the City of Norwich club.
