Liam Cossey of Easton College and Amelia Williamson of Norwich High School for Girls were this year’s champions at the 23rd Norfolk Schools’ Championships.
Cossey came in with a 72, two over par, on a cool, foggy day at Royal Norwich to take the boys’ title for the first time while Williamson, who also won the girls’ title in 2014, was also an excellent winner on one under par 71.
The Handicap Champions were Sonny Williams of Easton College with a nett 68 off a five handicap and Ruby Patterson of Cromer Academy with a nett 65 off 36.
The U14 Boys’ Championship was won by Charlie Woodward of Hethersett Academy with a nett 68 off 16 and Emily Reynolds won the girls’ equivalent with a nett 73 off 23.
The team prize went to Thorpe St Andrew with 135 and Hope Neild, Eve Neild and Billy Britcher will go forward to represent Norfolk in the National Final at Woodhall Spa in July. This is the third time Thorpe St Andrew have progressed, winning the event in 2015 and going back to defend their title in 2016
The trophies were presented jointly by Graham Turner, president of the Norfolk CGU, Heather Keeble, president of the Norfolk LCGA, Royal Norwich club captain John Davison and ladies’ captain Jacky Pett.
Again Norfolk went against the national trend, with 19 girls taking part. The standard of golf was excellent and it was pleasing to see so many younger players taking part, which bodes well for the future of golf in the county.
