Commodore Julian Jefferies described Saturday as an 'historic day for Hickling Broad Sailing Club' after their joint open day.
A steady stream of visitors attended with a wide range of activities available for both children and adults.
Norfolk Wildlife Trust had a gazebo on the club lawn with information on the Trust and colouring activities for children in the form of face masks. Numerous brightly coloured animal faces then decorated the club lawn.
Hickling Windsurfing Club, also an RYA accredited club, had both a static windsurfer for land practice and boards and sails available for on the water try-outs. There was a nice cross training exercise as windsurfers tried sailing and sailors tried windsurfing.
Norfolk Police, with both the 'Broads Beat' and a visiting inspector by car, attended. One officer was happy to say 'this is what it's all about', referring to beautiful weather, around 30 dinghies on the water with more safety cover than required and a fabulous mix of club members and visitors.

Guests had the option of a sail with a club helm or a trip around the broad in one of two RIBs set aside from safety duties as tour boats. One non-sailing family were thrilled that parents in a RIB could take pictures of their two children in a Wayfarer. Whilst not the purpose of the day several families visiting expressed serious interest in joining HSBC.
Commodore Jefferies justified his comment and use of the word 'historic' as this was the first event at which key players in the management of the broad had come together and had unanimously declared the day a huge success.

This was networking in the most glorious of locations and relationships between the sailing and windsurfing clubs were cemented with joint ventures in the future; the Trust saw the value of the broad being used for water sports and social events attracting locals and visitors that can only lead to more respect for the unique environment of the broads.
These refreshed relationships will drive Hickling Broad to new heights involving all the parties at the event.
