The first leg of the annual team match between Norwich Frostbite SC and Norfolk Broads YC was sailed in Norfolk Dinghies at the Frostbite club.
The competition was excellent with the team of young sailors from NBYC proving strong opposition.
In the first race, Chris Bunn and Ian Richardson took first and Henry Harston and Tom Baker second to put NBYC ahead. In the second there were plenty of changes of position and tactical moves. On the last lap, Danny Tyrrell and Ray Johnson, for Frostbites, managed to work their way through to lead at the last mark. They took first place, with Sam Woodcock and David Yapp, also from Frostbites, a close behind.
Overall, Frostbites finished the day with a two-point advantage. Whether Frostbites can hold on to their lead will be decided in the second leg, to be sailed at Wroxham, in White Boats, in September.
Elsewhere, lighter winds than recent weeks and a good show of sunshine brought out the fleet at Rollebsy Broad.
With three D-Ones and a rarely-sighted GP14 joining the Wayfarers, the multisail fleet was boosted into double figures. Chris Sallis led both races in his D-One, with Steve Gray working his way through more cautiously – neither could escape the Wayfarers on handicap. With a virtually windward/leeward course over nearly the full length of the broad, Dave Houghton and Jon Symonds along with Val and Chris Hanson (Wayfarers) were able to fly their spinnakers to great effect, taking the first two positions in both races. Bob Sparrow and Steve led the non-spinnaker boats, just sneaking ahead of Sallis for third in race one with the result more comfortably reversed in race two.
In the single handers Mike McNamara (Harrier) and David Frary (Finn) led the fleet round in both races, McNamara edging the handicap result. They were chased by Dave Shipstone (Finn) in race one and Keith Sykes (RS300) in race two, but in the handicap battle it was John Saddington's Solo which triumphed for third over the Highfield family – Stuart's Laser in race one and Phil's Streaker in race two.
The spring-like weather encouraged 12 boats to take to the water after lunch: Houghton and Symonds took the handicap win.
