Norfolk pair Barry Fulcher and James Auckland enjoyed success at the ITF World Seniors (M35) Championships in Cape Town as they picked up a silver medal representing Britain.

Britain came out on top of their group with Fulcher playing his part with a singles victory in the 2-1 win against Russia as well as a doubles victory in the 3-0 beating of Mozambique.

Fulcher, who was captaining the British side, partnered Auckland to doubles victory over the USA as they were also dispatched 3-0 overall.

It set up a semi-final against Spain and Britain advanced thanks to a 2-1 win as Auckland claimed a doubles victory alongside Simon Dickson.

Auckland had been due to partner Fulcher in the doubles rubber of the final against France but the tie was already over after losses for Chris Lewis and Dickson in the singles.

But Fulcher, originally from Eaton, was delighted to seal a silver medal overall and believes Britain are capable of going one better in the future.

'Our team worked hard all week and we narrowly missed out on the world title after a tight loss against a very strong French team,' he said.

'The team were in uncharted territory (in the final) after five consecutive bronze medals in the age group, and will look to go one further in next year's campaign. France were just too good for us, we will get them next time!'
