Sophie McKinna is confident she can leave her mark on the Commonwealth Games after the Great Yarmouth shot putter claimed her first Sainsbury's British Championships medal.

Buoyed by selection for England's Commonwealth Games squad and a new season's best the weekend before, McKinna arrived at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium in confident mood.

And although her best effort of 15.79m was almost a metre off her top 2014 mark, it was still good enough to see the 19-year-old walk away with bronze. Although she knows she has more to give it was the medal around her neck that the Great Yarmouth & District AC starlet chose to focus on.

'It was a mixed bag. I would have liked to have thrown further but this is the first time I have won a national outdoor medal so while I am a bit disappointed I have to be happy,' said McKinna.

'Obviously I threw my season's best last week and personally I always take a dip after throwing a best so hopefully I will be able to come back up again. '

Also in action was high-jumper Chris Baker and he all but booked his spot in Great Britain's squad for the European Championships by finishing second. Baker cleared 2.24m, losing out to Allan Smith only on countback, and with the qualification height already in the bag the event in Zurich will be a good finish to the season, although the Common-wealth Games are his top priority.

'It is always heart-breaking in the high jump that you can lose on count back having jumped the same height but credit to Allan for jumping so well,' Baker said.

'It is frustrating because I feel like there are bigger jumps there.'
