Norfolk’s two representatives in the English Senior Women’s Amateur Championships at Hallamshire Golf Club near Sheffield both gave excellent accounts of themselves.
Jo Ashmore and Tracey Williamson had a busy schedule leading up to the event, having reached the matchplay stages of the County Championships, but that didn’t prevent them from making their mark.
Ashmore (Barnham Broom) came out firing on all cylinders just two days after playing at King’s Lynn, with an opening 73 rounded off by three successive birdies taking her to the very top of the leaderboard.
She ended up qualifying in fifth position after a second round of 80 but then bowed out in the first round of the matchplay after losing 4&3 to Bromborough’s Caroline Berry.
Williamson, a newly qualified senior, made it through to the knock-out stages in tied 13th position with rounds of 80 and 79 and moved into the last 16 by beating Carol Houghton 5&4.
The Royal Cromer player was then involved in a tight match against former champion Catherine Rawthorne from Sale and her bid to reach the quarter-finals at the first attempt was thwarted as she lost by one hole.
On the men’s amateur scene three local players in the qualifiers for the Brabazon Trophy all failed to make the cut.
James Biggs (Diss) and Calvin Sherwood (Rookery Park) both recorded rounds of 75 in the Southern Qualifier at Camberley Heath while up north at Fairhaven Chris Bartrum of Diss signed for an 83.
The qualifiers f go forward to join the 78 exempt players in the Brabazon Trophy – the English men’s open amateur stroke play – at Frilford Heath starting on May 31.
Meanwhile the NLCGA’s Gillieson Cup competition has now reached the second round stage, with holders Swaffham travelling to Great Yarmouth and Caister on Sunday July 1.
First round results (home teams first): Royal West Norfolk beat Sheringham 2-1, Dunston Hall beat Middleton Hall 2-1, Mundesley beat Feltwell 2-1, Eaton beat Fakenham 2-1, Dereham beat The Links 2-1, Barnham Broom beat Caldecott Hall 2-1, Bawburgh w/o Heacham Manor, Costessey Park beat Richmond Park 3-0, King’s Lynn lost to Royal Norwich 3-0, Marriott Sprowston Manor beat Ryston Park 3-0.
