City of Norwich Athletic Club star Iona Lake has won a British title.

The 24-year-old won the 3,000-metre women's steeplechase at the World Championship Team Trials at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham yesterday, which doubled up as the British championships, running close to her personal best.

Lake finished in nine minutes, 57.53 seconds, just over two seconds ahead of nearest challenger Charlotte Taylor-Green (9:59.58) and with Katie Ingle not far behind (10:02.34) in third place.

The Conac athlete, who represented Great Britain at the European Under-23 Championships in Estonia in 2015, was just 0.89 of a second away from her PB of 9:56.64, set at a BMC Grand Prix meeting in Watford two years ago.

It was the third-fastest time run by a British woman this year, ahead of the World Championships being held in London this August. It was over 14 seconds short of Lennie Waite's 9:43.33 – who finished fourth in Birmingham – and 20 second behind Rosie Clarke's year-leading time of 9:36.75.

However, it did meet the qualifying standard of 10.40 minutes so Lake is now eligible for selection for the World Championships.
