Norwich's Nick Dempsey closed in on securing a medal at the London Olympics after a productive sailing Saturday at Weymouth.

The 31-year-old windsurfer from Mulbarton moved into joint second after eight races in the RS-X class thanks to a second and third in race seven and eight – taking him level on points with Germany's Toni Wilhelm, although a sizeable gap separates them and Dutch leader Dorian van Rijsselberge.

'It's good but I made a little mistake in the last race – I basically got completely shafted and paid the price for taking a risk,' said Dempsey. 'A good day but I'm kind of running out of races.

'I'm staying in it and sailing well but that gold medal is getting further and further away. There's a large part of me that's concerned we're running out of races.

'Dorian is getting further and further away but I am running out of races. He's sailing amazingly. He'll either come first or last sailing like that – and so far he's coming first.'

Races nine and 10 take place at Weymouth on Sunday, before Tuesday's medal race.

'I've got to turn it on tomorrow,' said Dempsey after Saturday's action. 'If the wind drops for the next race I think I will be better suited to lighter winds because they are taller.'
