Nicholls makes his return to the summit

Three years after first winning the mondeo rods East Anglian Championship, Gavin Nicholls (Norwich) won the title for a second time at Swaffham Raceway's Festival of Speed.

Nicholls passed King's Lynn's Paddy Cummins, who himself had got the drop on pole-sitter Leslie Clarke (Norwich) at the start of the 20 lap race.

The festival provided over 40 races from eight different formula, a mix of stock cars and hot rods.

Newly crowned champions included youngster James Saunders (Wisbech) in the junior rods, Toftwood's Terry Sewell in the 2-litre hot rods, Rusty Madden (Norwich) in the stock rods and Snetterton's Kelven Nicholls in the open-wheeled superstocks. The lightning rods produced some of the best racing with five race winners. Danielle Hewitt (Ely), Gary Legrice (Norwich) and Michael Gabriel (Worstead) won the qualifying heats, although it was ex-banger driver James Ellis (Ely) who won the day's main event.

Racing switches to Fridays from July 22 (7.30pm) when bangers and junior bangers return to action.
