Swaffham Raceway season gets underway

The new banger and stock car racing season kicks off at Swaffham Raceway this Sunday (1.30pm). This will be the Norfolk venue’s 37th year of action, having started in 1975, making it one of the countries longest serving short circuit ovals.
The main feature is the Impact Video Open for 1800cc national bangers which is the traditional season opener. With an excellent prize money and trophy package up for grabs it’s hoped this annual event will entice a number of the area’s top banger drivers out. A strong supporting cast features two more banger classes, the unlimited rookies which consist of cars from the top end of the size and power range and the ever-keen youngsters in the junior bangers.
The stock car element comes from the SuperStocks with Brandon’s Richard Shearing intent on successfully defending his track points title. This looks like being a very strong year for the open-wheeled class with a number of new drivers joining the ranks. Completing the bill and providing the non-contact hot rod style of racing are the mondeo rods. Last year Paul Brett won a closely fought points battle and the Norwich driver is looking to repeat his success this season.
Admission prices have remained the same as last year, so it’s £10 adults, £5 young adults/OAP’s, children (under 7) are free and a family ticket is available for £25. Full details of this, and the whole of the 2012 season, can be found on the website at www.swaffhamraceway.com.
