British Superbike legend Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne will make a full recovery from his Snetterton test crash, according to his team.

The 41-year-old, six-times BSB champion was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital on Thursday after his accident at Palmer (turn three) of the Norfolk circuit, three laps into his opening session of the mid-season test.

The Be Wiser Ducati rider was briefly unconscious after the crash, before British Superbike organisers confirmed Byrne was receiving treatment for neck and back injuries.

Come Friday morning, his team added that Byrne “remains in hospital following yesterday’s test; he will undergo surgery on his vertebrae and possibly neck however will make a full recovery”.

Not only is Byrne the most successful rider in BSB history. He has also won eight of the last night races around the Norfolk circuit.

However, Byrne injuries will now make him a major doubt for this year’s BSB round at Snetterton, which takes place on the weekend of June 15-17.

Byrne currently sits third in this year’s championship, with JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s series leader Leon Haslam third-quickest in Thursday’s test times – which were led by his team-mate, Luke Mossey.
