Pre-season optimism is building for Lowestoft Town after club legend Micky Chapman finally got to enjoy his testimonial against Norwich City.
It has been a tough couple of years for the Trawlerboys since the man who managed and played in over 1,600 matches for the club across 33 years but Chapman says he is proud of the way manager Ady Gallagher has persevered.
Relegation from step two of the non-league pyramid was followed by the controversial implosion of the club’s academy system and a threadbare squad battling to a mid-table finish last season.
“I was 100 per cent proud, for them to finish where they did,” Chapman said, having worked alongside Gallagher as joint manager for 15 years. “He’s got a good guy alongside him now in Brooksy (assistant manager Dale Brooks), they’re a good partnership, they’re respected.
“It’s not easy to rebuild a squad and that’s what they’re doing. They’ve got some good youngsters here, they’ve got that blend of youth and experience and then they’ve got some young, hungry players as well to go alongside them.
“So they’re on the right track, they’re working hard and I think it all bodes well for an exciting season ahead.”
The Blues took the lead through defender Travis Cole before seeing the Canaries hit back to win 5-1 in front of around 2,500 people at the Amber Dew Events Stadium on Saturday – with Cole later checked over in hospital after suffering mild concussion in an aerial collision.
After the first attempt at the testimonial was washed out a year ago, it was a special return to the club for Chapman.
“Norwich get inundated with requests for pre-season friendlies but they honoured the fixture,” he added. “They said they do everything they could last year when it was called off and they’ve stuck to their word.
“They’re a family club and that’s why I support them, because they’re a good club, so couldn’t have asked any more of them – absolutely fantastic and appreciated as well.”
Gallagher’s side continue their pre-season preparations with a home friendly against Kirkley & Pakefield tomorrow (3pm).
