Lowestoft Town boss Jamie Godbold admits his side's disciplinary record has got to improve ahead of Saturday afternoon's FA Cup second qualifying round tie at Hanwell Town.

Shaun Bammant's second-half red card last weekend against Tamworth saw the Blues' five-match unbeaten run come to an end.

And the Trawlerboys' chief insists his squad have got to cut out the unnecessary cautions because it is threatening to undermine their season.

'Our disciplinary record is obviously an area of concern as we start to rack up a number of needless bookings and red cards,' said Godbold, whose side saw off Ware in the first qualifying round thanks to a Bammant winner.

'My pet hate is picking up pointless bookings for arguing with the officials, which at some point during the season will start costing us as we will start missing key players for important games, and unfortunately we don't have the squad size to be able to miss more than a couple of players each game. We must address this as a group and improve this area if we are to meet our season's objectives.'

Godbold insisted there were positives to take in defeat, most notably Kieran Higgs getting his first goal of the season.

'I was pleased with how competitive we were,' he told the club's website. 'It was one of the games that both teams looked to press hard which made the game more of a battle than what we would have liked and left moments of 'football' relatively sparse.

'I was delighted for Higgsy to have got off the mark for the season and hope he starts to build on that.'

Lowestoft will be slight favourites against Hanwell, who play a step below the Blues in the Bostik South Central Division.

Godbold hopes his side can maintain a sense of composure that has eluded them at times this season.

'For us – its yet another learning opportunity,' he said. 'Be braver to get the ball down and play, and most obvious is the need for cool heads in the heat of a battle.'

The victors will not only secure a third qualifying round place but also £9,000 in prize money.
