Lowestoft Town assistant boss Andy Reynolds insists there are no plans to bring in another goalkeeper at the Amber Dew Events Stadium.

Elvijs Putnins' injury early on in the defeat to Rushall Olympic last weekend meant Reynolds himself had to answer the Blues' SOS call from the bench.

James Bergin was drafted in for one match on Tuesday in the loss at Needham in Putnins' absence but the Latvian is expected to be fit for this afternoon's clash at home to Barwell.

Reynolds admits the club are taking a calculated gamble running with just one recognised senior goalkeeper in the squad.

'We fully intended to go with two goalkeepers but Billy Johnson then got his deal at Norwich (in the summer),' said Reynolds. 'It's difficult to get a goalkeeper of the required level that's willing to travel home and away just for the experience.

'We can't afford to pay for a goalkeeper that we might only use two or three times a season. We feel that money would be better spent elsewhere on the squad.

'Maybe in time that will change but we've got a budget that we've got to stick to and be sensible with.

'I'm a plan B if needed because we are not in a situation where we can afford to have two or three goalkeepers.'

Lowestoft are counting the cost of injuries to senior players but hope to have Connor Deeks and Shaun Bammant available to start today.

The Blues will be looking to arrest a run of four straight defeats that has tempered some of the optimism from the club's surge earlier this season.

'We know what our objectives are - but at the moment we've got too many players watching from the sidelines,' added Reynolds. 'We are asking a lot of the younger players to step up and we all need to stick together.

'We came very close to getting a result at Needham and now we've got to go again on Saturday.'

Reynolds admitted it will be good to get back in front of their own fans this afternoon.

'The supporters have been great and we've had some really good numbers with us away from home.

'But it will be good to get back in front of our own fans again. I think it will be good for some of our young lads as well as they will come to realise what a big club they are playing for.

'Hopefully the fans will see the progress that we're trying to make.'
