Lowestoft Town joint boss Ady Gallagher believes his side have a great chance to seize the initiative in the race for the play-offs ahead of their Ryman League Premier Division clash against Metropolitan Police this afternoon.

The Blues shrugged off last weekend's reverse at Margate to thump Wingate & Finchley 7-0 on Tuesday to keep them in contention for a place in the top five. With several of their rivals dropping points in the week, Gallagher believes now is the time for his side to show their mental strength and firmly establish their promotion credentials.

'I think there will be a few more twists and turns and it's really close between second and seventh,' said Gallagher, inset.

'There's not a lot to choose between all those teams and it's going to be a case of whoever finishes the strongest. We're confident that can be us – I don't think Wealdstone (leaders) can be caught. But the play-off positions are there for the taking – we could be right in there. It's up to us to take that chance.'

Gallagher was delighted with the ruthless streak his side showed against Wingate and feels his side are hitting form at just the right time.

'I think this team is really developing. There are still things we can improve as a unit – I think we could close games out better and we could manage games a little better. (But) Tuesday night was the first time we have been really clinical and there have been some really encouraging signs in the last few weeks.

'Tuesday was also our 20th clean sheet of the season – that's fantastic. If we can maintain that and carry a threat then there's still a lot for us to play for.'

Gallagher admitted the club has been scouring the leagues in a bid to bolster their squad but isn't concerned if the Blues are not able to bring anyone in.

'We are always looking but if nothing does happen then we are more than happy to go with the squad we have got,' he said. 'They haven't let us down. It's a really tight-knit squad and we're in a good frame of mind at the moment.'

Lowestoft hope to have Chris Henderson available after the striker missed the win in the week with a virus. Police are one of the few clubs in the division with little to play for in the run-in as they sit comfortably in mid-table. However, Gallagher believes that could make the Londoners a trickier proposition.

'If teams come and they have nothing to play for then that can be dangerous because they won't be coming with any fear,' he added. 'We are expecting another really tough game but we have to try and build on the performance we gave against Wingate.'
