Exciting Norwich prospect Liam Goddard has been tipped for the top.

The 22-year-old will be looking to make it three wins out of three at the next Norwich boxing show on March 15 – and trainer Graham Everett has seen star quality.

“I know this is a high bar, but he reminds me of Joe Calzaghe with his fast output, his speed, his slight unpredictability, and he can punch,” said Everett. “That’s what he has modelled himself on.”

Everett believes Goddard could follow in the illustrious footsteps of some of the city’s other British champions.

Twins Liam and Ryan Walsh, Sam Sexton and trainer Jon Thaxton have all reached the top step on the domestic scene.

“I think he can reach that level, of course,” said Everett. “You have to set the bar high, that is the whole idea. We have done it four times out of Norwich and we will do it again.

“He is a good boy, a good lad - he works full time which makes it a little bit more difficult for him but hopefully we will get there. He is a good trainer, a good runner, a good lad.”

Goddard is a precision engineer with Rackheath firm KM Engineering – and his skills in the ring have been just as accurate, his debut win a stunning early finish against Yaddollah Ghasemi before he came through a tough challenge on points against Fonz Alexander.

“I believe he has a great future,” he said. “He had a great fight with Fonz and that was a far from easy fight and he handled it really well. We will be looking to move him on pretty quickly.”

Cruiserweight Iain Martell is also on the March dinner show, at the Holiday Inn Airport Hotel, along with Owen Blunden, Connor Vian and a visiting Ipswich fighter.

Joe Steed is absent – he will be fighting on a Matchroom promotion in Peterborough on March 2.

“Iain always brings excitement and we are hoping for a busy year and good things from him,” said Everett. “It was easy to slip Joe into the Matchroom show and his tickets have gone through the roof, he seems to be taking half of Wisbech with him. It has lifted him – let’s hope he gets a TV slot.”
